About Niña Pastori
María Rosa García was born in 1978. She was the youngest of five children and the only girl. Her mother, "La Pastori" García, was also a flamenco singer.
Her stage name, "Niña Pastori," means "Pastori's Girl." People started calling her "la niña" (the girl) because she was the only daughter. When she performed, they would say, "la Pastori's girl is going to sing." This nickname stuck, and she later shortened it to Niña Pastori.
She went to school at Vicente Tofiño in San Fernando.
Early Singing Career
Niña Pastori started singing at a very young age. When she was six, she sang with her mother in flamenco clubs called tablaos. A year later, she won a singing contest in San Fernando. She sang bulerías, a type of flamenco music, and showed her amazing talent even as a child.
One of her first teachers was Camarón de la Isla, another famous flamenco artist from San Fernando. Niña Pastori first followed his pure flamenco style. Later, she added more pop sounds to her music. She did this without losing her flamenco roots.
Rise to Fame
Artists Paco Ortega and Alejandro Sanz helped Niña Pastori make her first album. It was called Entre dos puertos and she was seventeen. The album sold over 150,000 copies, making her very popular. Her song Tú me camelas was a big hit in Spain in 1996. Since then, she has released ten albums and sold two million records.
Her second album, Eres luz (1998), was also very successful. It included songs by Paco Ortega, Alejandro Sanz, and her brother Paco. In 2000, she released Cañaílla. This album was more flamenco and was dedicated to her hometown.
Her album María (2002) showed a more personal style. She started writing some of her own songs. She continued this on her fifth album, No hay quinto malo (2004).
Musical Journeys and Awards
In 2006, Niña Pastori released Joyas prestadas. On this album, she sang her own versions of songs by other artists. These included Joan Manuel Serrat, Alejandro Sanz, Maná, and Juan Luis Guerra. Ten years later, she released a second part called Ámame como soy (nuevas joyas).
Niña Pastori has won many important awards. She has won four Latin Grammys. Three were for Best Flamenco Music Album, and one was for Best Folk Album. She has also received Gold and Platinum records in Spain and other countries. She is the only flamenco artist to be nominated for the Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. She has also won two Premios Dial awards.
In 2014, she worked with Mexican singer Lila Downs and Argentinian singer Soledad Pastorutti. They released a collaborative album called Raíz. This album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album. It won the Latin Grammy for Best Folk Album. The three artists also worked with the band Santana on a song called Una Noche en Nápoles.
In 2018, she received the Medalla de Andalucía. This is a very important award in the Andalusia region of Spain. She also sang the Andalusian hymn at the event. She also received an Honorary Award for her career at the Premios Flamenco En La Piel awards.
Special Performances and Personal Life
Niña Pastori sang a version of Schubert's Ave Maria. She performed it for three million people during Pope John Paul II's visit to Madrid in May 2003. This version was later added to a new edition of her album María.
One of her popular songs, "Cai," was written by Alejandro Sanz. It is a song dedicated to the city of Cádiz. She also performed as a special guest at an event where Alejandro Sanz celebrated the 20th anniversary of his album "Más."
Niña Pastori is married to Julio Jiménez Borja, known as "Chaboli." He is a co-producer, composer, and percussionist on her albums. She is also the great-granddaughter of a flamenco singer named Inés "la del Pelao."
