Nicholas Udall (born 1504 – died 23 December 1556) was an English writer, teacher, and church leader. He is famous for writing Ralph Roister Doister, which many people consider the first comedy play written in the English language.

Early Life and Education

Nicholas Udall was born in Hampshire, England. He went to school at Winchester College and later studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. During his studies, he was guided by Thomas Cromwell, a very important person in the government at that time. Cromwell even mentioned Udall in his letters and records, showing that he was a recognized scholar.

A Career in Teaching

After finishing his studies at Oxford, Udall began his career as a teacher. In 1533, he taught at a grammar school in London. Around 1534, he became the headmaster of Eton College, a famous school. He taught Latin there, helping students learn this important language. He stayed at Eton until 1541, when he faced some difficulties and had to leave his position.

Later, in 1554, Udall returned to teaching as the headmaster of Westminster School. He continued to share his knowledge and guide young students.

Church and Later Life

Nicholas Udall was a supporter of the Reformed Church of England. He was successful during the reign of King Edward VI. He also continued his work during the time of Queen Mary I, who was a Roman Catholic.

In 1547, he became a vicar (a type of church leader) in Braintree, Essex. Later, in 1551, he became a vicar in Calborne, on the Isle of Wight. Nicholas Udall passed away in 1556 and was buried in the churchyard of St Margaret's, Westminster.

Notable Writings and Plays

Nicholas Udall was a very active writer and translator. His most famous work is the play Ralph Roister Doister. This play was likely performed for Queen Mary around 1553, but it was not officially published until 1566. It's a fun comedy that explores different characters and situations.

Udall also translated parts of important books from other languages into English. For example, he translated parts of Apophthegms by Erasmus. He also helped with the English version of the Paraphrases of Erasmus, which was published in 1548.

He worked with John Leland to write songs for the coronation of Anne Boleyn in 1533. Udall also wrote a Latin textbook called Flowers for Latin Speaking in 1533. This book even used parts of his own comedy play to help students learn Latin.

It is also believed that Udall wrote another play called Respublica, which was performed for Queen Mary in 1553.
