Nicholson is a city located in Jackson County, in the state of Georgia, United States. In 2020, about 1,808 people lived there. This was more than the 1,696 people who lived there in 2010.
Nicholson is famous for its "Daisy Festival." It is also known for some famous people who have lived there, like the singer Kenny Rogers. The current mayor of Nicholson is Jan Bell Webster.
History of Nicholson
The Georgia General Assembly, which is like the state's parliament, officially made Nicholson a town in 1907. It's not fully known why the name "Nicholson" was chosen for this community.
Geography of Nicholson
Nicholson is found in the eastern part of Jackson County. Its exact location is 34°6′53″N 83°25′46″W / 34.11472°N 83.42944°W. U.S. Route 441 is a main road that goes right through the middle of the city.
If you travel north on U.S. Route 441, you will reach Commerce in about 7 miles (11 km). If you go south, you will get to Athens in about 12 miles (19 km). Another road, Georgia State Route 335, goes west from Nicholson. It leads to Jefferson, which is the main town of the county, about 9 miles (14 km) away.
The United States Census Bureau says that the city covers a total area of about 3.97 square miles (10.29 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.04 square kilometers), is water. The city sits on top of a ridge. Water from this ridge flows west and east into smaller streams that eventually join the North Oconee River.
