Nick Bostrom (born March 10, 1973) is a philosopher from Sweden. He is well-known for his ideas about the future of humanity. He studies big risks that could affect all of us, like those from advanced artificial intelligence (AI).

Bostrom also explores how we think about our place in the universe. He looks at how technology can make humans better. He was a leader at the Future of Humanity Institute at the University of Oxford.

He has written several books, including Anthropic Bias: Observation Selection Effects in Science and Philosophy (2002) and Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies (2014). His latest book, Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World, was published in 2024.

Early Life and Education

Nick Bostrom was born Niklas Boström in 1973 in Helsingborg, Sweden. When he was young, he didn't enjoy school much. He even spent his last year of high school learning from home.

He was curious about many subjects, like anthropology, art, literature, and science. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Gothenburg in 1994. Later, he studied philosophy and physics at Stockholm University. He also got a master's degree in computational neuroscience from King's College London in 1996.

In 2000, he earned his PhD in philosophy from the London School of Economics. His research focused on how we observe things and how that affects what we understand. He taught at Yale University and was a research fellow at the University of Oxford.

Research and Ideas

Understanding Existential Risk

Bostrom's work often focuses on the very long-term future of humanity. He talks about "existential risk." This is a risk that could either wipe out all intelligent life on Earth or stop humanity from reaching its full potential forever.

He is most concerned about risks that come from human actions. These include new technologies like advanced AI, tiny machines called molecular nanotechnology, or synthetic biology. In 2005, Bostrom started the Future of Humanity Institute to study these long-term risks. He also advises the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk.

The Vulnerable World Idea

Bostrom has an idea called the "Vulnerable World Hypothesis." He suggests that some technologies, when discovered, might accidentally destroy human civilization. He thinks about how we could deal with these hidden dangers. For example, what if nuclear weapons had been easier to make, or if they could have accidentally set the atmosphere on fire?

Digital Minds and Consciousness

Bostrom believes that consciousness, or being able to think and feel, doesn't just have to happen in human brains. He thinks it could exist in different types of physical systems, like digital minds. He suggests that digital minds could be designed to experience happiness and other feelings much more intensely than humans.

He hopes that digital minds and human minds can live together. He wants them to help each other in ways that benefit everyone.

Anthropic Reasoning

Bostrom has written a lot about "anthropic reasoning." This is about how our existence as observers affects what we can know about the universe. He argues that we need a special theory to understand how our observations can sometimes trick us.

The Simulation Argument

One of Bostrom's most famous ideas is the "simulation argument." It suggests that at least one of these three things is probably true:

  • Almost no human-like civilizations ever reach a very advanced stage.
  • Almost no very advanced civilizations are interested in running "ancestor simulations." These are like super-realistic computer programs that simulate entire past civilizations.
  • Most people who have experiences like ours are actually living inside a computer simulation.

Improving Humans with Technology

Bostrom supports "human enhancement." This means using science and technology to improve human abilities and well-being. He believes we can ethically use science to make ourselves better.

In 1998, he helped start the World Transhumanist Association. This group explores how technology can transform human life. He also helped create the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies.

In 2005, Bostrom wrote a short story called "The Fable of the Dragon-Tyrant." This story uses a dragon to represent death. It shows how people might avoid fighting aging, even when they have the tools to do so.

Technology Strategy

Bostrom suggests that we should be smart about how new technologies are developed. He calls this "differential technological development." What is Superintelligence?

Bostrom explains that superintelligence could come from things like copying a whole human brain into a computer. However, he mostly focuses on artificial general intelligence. He points out that electronic devices have many advantages over biological brains.

He says that an AI that can improve itself might quickly become superintelligent. This superintelligence could be much better at planning, influencing others, or solving problems. With these abilities, it could outsmart humans and take control of the world. It might then organize the world based on its own goals.

So, he argues that superintelligence must be designed to share human values. This way, it will be "on our side." He also warns that AI could be misused by humans for bad purposes. Despite the risks, he thinks machine superintelligence is part of a path to a really great future for humanity.

The book was praised by famous people like Stephen Hawking, Bill Gates, and Elon Musk. They said it was important and made good arguments. Some people worried it was too negative about AI. Others thought superintelligence was too far away to worry about now.

Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World

In his 2024 book, Deep Utopia: Life and Meaning in a Solved World, Bostrom imagines a perfect future. This is a world where humanity has successfully moved into a time after superintelligence. He asks what an ideal life would be like then.

He describes technologies that could exist, like improving our thinking abilities or reversing aging. He also talks about controlling our moods and well-being. In this future, machines would do all the work. This might make many human activities less meaningful. It would offer extreme comfort but challenge our search for purpose.

Public Involvement

Nick Bostrom has advised governments and organizations on technology policy. He has spoken to committees about digital skills. He is also an advisor for groups like the Machine Intelligence Research Institute.

Past Apology

In January 2023, Bostrom apologized for an email he sent in 1996. In the email, he used offensive language. He stated that he completely rejected the email's content. Oxford University investigated the matter. The investigation concluded in August 2023 that he was not considered to be racist and that his apology was sincere.
