Nick Kypreos's Hockey Journey
Early Life and Junior Hockey
Nick Kypreos was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. When he was young, he played in the 1979 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He was a strong goal scorer in junior hockey with the North Bay Centennials in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). In the 1985–86 OHL season, he scored 62 goals, which was the second-highest in the league.
Playing in the NHL
Even though he was a great scorer in junior hockey, Nick Kypreos found it harder to score in the NHL. He became known as an enforcer. An enforcer is a player who protects teammates and tries to change the momentum of a game through physical play, often by fighting. He was never chosen in the NHL draft, but the Philadelphia Flyers signed him as a free agent. His NHL career actually began with the Washington Capitals.
His best NHL season was in 1992–93 when he played for the Hartford Whalers. That year, he scored 17 goals, which was his career high. He also had 325 penalty minutes, one of the highest totals in the league that season.
In 1994, Kypreos was part of the Stanley Cup champion New York Rangers team. Winning the Stanley Cup is one of the biggest achievements in ice hockey.
His final NHL team was his hometown team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. His playing career ended because of a concussion he got during a pre-season game in 1997. After this injury, he had post-concussion syndrome, which meant he had to stop playing hockey. He finished his NHL career with 46 goals, 44 assists, and 1,210 penalty minutes in 442 regular season games.
Life After Playing
After retiring from playing, Nick Kypreos became a hockey analyst. He worked for Sportsnet in Canada. He was a co-host of Hockey Central and Hockey Central at Noon. He shared his knowledge and opinions about hockey on these shows.
He also appeared on TSN as an analyst. For example, he was there when Hockey Canada announced the Canadian national team for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Kypreos also had a small acting role. He played a professional hockey player in an episode of the HBO show Arli$$ in 1996.
