Niederwald is a small city in Texas, located in both Caldwell and Hays counties. In 2020, about 668 people lived there. The name "Niederwald" comes from German and means "low forest" or "low wood." German settlers gave the town its name. Many people from Germany and other parts of Europe moved to this area of Central Texas in the 1800s. Locals sometimes call this region the "Texas-German belt."

Where is Niederwald?
Niederwald is found in the eastern part of Hays County and the northern part of Caldwell County. Texas State Highway 21 is the main road that goes through the city. You can travel southwest about 15 miles (24 km) to reach San Marcos. If you head east, you'll find Bastrop about 26 miles (42 km) away. The big city of Austin is about 24 miles (39 km) to the north.
The city covers a total area of about 3.67 square miles (9.5 square kilometers). There are no large bodies of water within the city limits.
