The Night Hawk River is a river in Ontario, Canada. It is part of the large James Bay and Moose River water systems. This river flows through the Cochrane and Timiskaming Districts in northeastern Ontario. The Night Hawk River is about 33 kilometers (20 miles) long. It starts at Austen Lake and ends at Night Hawk Lake. Night Hawk Lake is also where the Frederick House River begins. The Frederick House River is a branch of the Abitibi River.

The River's Journey

The Night Hawk River starts its journey at Austen Lake. This lake is in the western part of the Timiskaming District. The river begins at a high point, about 357 meters (1,171 feet) above sea level. Some of the water that flows into Austen Lake comes from the West Night Hawk River. This means the Night Hawk River's water system actually reaches into three different districts in Ontario.

The river first flows towards the northeast. It passes over a small dam along the way. Then, it turns north and picks up water from the Little Night Hawk River. This smaller river joins from the left side and comes from Little Night Hawk Lake. The Night Hawk River then turns northeast again. It takes in the East Night Hawk River, which joins from the right side and comes from East Night Hawk Lake.

After that, the river heads north and flows into the city of Timmins in the Cochrane District. It then turns northwest and gets more water from another branch, the West Night Hawk River. Finally, the Night Hawk River reaches its end at St. Peter Bay. This bay is at the southern tip of Night Hawk Lake. Here, the river is about 274 meters (899 feet) above sea level.

What Feeds the River?

Many smaller streams and rivers flow into the Night Hawk River. These are called tributaries. They add water to the main river as it flows.

Here are some of the main tributaries:

  • West Night Hawk River (joins from the left)
  • East Night Hawk River (joins from the right)
  • Little Night Hawk River (joins from the left)
  • Esker Creek (joins from the right)
  • Austen Lake (where the Night Hawk River starts)
    • Kitchiming Creek (flows into Austen Lake from the left)
    • West Night Hawk River (flows into Austen Lake from the left)
      • West Night Hawk Lake (where the West Night Hawk River begins)
    • Wabiasin Creek (flows into Austen Lake from the left)
