Nikita Scherbak's Hockey Journey
Starting in Junior Hockey
Nikita began his junior hockey career in 2012. He played for Kapitan Stupino in the Russian Junior Hockey League (MHL).
In 2013, the Saskatoon Blades picked him in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft. He then joined the Blades.
During the 2013–14 WHL season, Nikita was a top rookie. He led all first-year players in goals, assists, and total points. Because of his great play, he was invited to the 2014 CHL Top Prospects Game.
Nikita was seen as a promising player for the National Hockey League (NHL). Many thought he would be a first-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. After being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, he signed a three-year contract.
Later, Nikita was traded to the Everett Silvertips. This move happened because of league rules about how many non-North American players a team can have.
Playing as a Professional
Nikita made his NHL debut for the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016–17 NHL season. On January 7, 2017, he played against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored a goal on his very first shot in the NHL! This goal helped the Canadiens win the game 5–3.
In the 2018–19 NHL season, Nikita was sent to the Laval Rocket. This team is Montreal's minor league affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL). He played some games there to get more ice time.
After his time with the Canadiens, Nikita was claimed by the Los Angeles Kings. He played a few games for them before becoming a free agent.
In 2019, Nikita decided to return to Russia. He signed a three-year contract with Avangard Omsk in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He later joined another KHL team, Traktor Chelyabinsk.
In 2021, Nikita came back to North America. He signed an AHL contract with the Texas Stars. He had a good season, scoring 5 goals and 15 points in 28 games.
After that, Nikita moved to Europe again. He played for HC '05 Banská Bystrica in Slovakia. He also played for Mountfield HK in the Czech Republic.
In 2022, Nikita had to leave the Czech Republic. His visa renewal was denied because of his Russian nationality. He then signed with HC Slovan Bratislava in Slovakia.
In July 2023, Nikita joined the Ducs d'Angers in France's top ice hockey league, the Ligue Magnus.
Most recently, on April 26, 2024, Nikita signed a one-year contract with EC VSV. This team is based in Austria and plays in the ICE Hockey League.
