Nipinnawasee is a small community located in Madera County, California, in the United States. It is considered a census-designated place, which means it's an area identified by the United States Census Bureau for gathering population data. Nipinnawasee is found in the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountains, about 1 mile (1.6 km) southeast of Miami Mountain. It sits at an elevation of 2,930 feet (893 meters) above sea level. In 2020, about 434 people lived there.

History of Nipinnawasee

The name "Nipinnawasee" was given to the town around 1908 by a man named Edgar B. Landon. He brought the name from Michigan. According to Native Americans from his home area, the name means "plenty of deer." The United States Post Office officially accepted the name in 1915.

A post office served the community of Nipinnawasee for many years, from 1912 until 1961. In July 1961, a large wildfire called the Harlow Fire caused a lot of damage. This fire burned about 43,000 acres (17,000 hectares). It destroyed much of Nipinnawasee and the nearby town of Ahwahnee. After the fire, Nipinnawasee did not fully recover.

Geography and Location

Nipinnawasee is located along the northwest edge of Madera County. It is next to the community of Ahwahnee to the southeast. To the northwest, it borders Mariposa County. The main road that goes through Nipinnawasee is California State Route 49.

The community covers a total area of about 3.1 square miles (8.0 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no large bodies of water. The water in the area flows into Peterson Creek. This creek then flows south into the Fresno River.

People of Nipinnawasee

In 2010, the population of Nipinnawasee was 475 people. All of these people lived in homes. The average number of people living in each home was about 2.47.

The population included people of different ages. About 18.9% of the people were under 18 years old. About 20.8% of the people were 65 years old or older. The average age of people in Nipinnawasee was 49.5 years.
