History of the Nisqually Tribe
The Nisqually Indian Reservation was created in 1854. This happened after the Treaty of Medicine Creek was signed. A treaty is an agreement between groups, in this case, the Nisqually Tribe and the United States government.
In 1918, a part of the reservation was taken by Pierce County. This land was used by the U.S. Army to build Fort Lewis. The Nisqually Tribe received money for their land. They were first paid $75,840. Later, in 1921, the government gave them an extra $65,000. This was because the first payment was not fair.
Geography and Location
The Nisqually Reservation is located at 47°0′22″N 122°40′11″W / 47.00611°N 122.66972°W. This is in the state of Washington.
The area is officially called the Nisqually Indian Community CDP. CDP stands for "census-designated place." This means it's an area that the government counts for population, but it's not a city or town. The reservation covers about 2.7 square miles (7.1 square kilometers). Most of this area is land.

In 2000, there were 588 people living in the area. About 60% of the people were Native American. Other groups included White, African American, Asian, and Pacific Islander people. Some people were also from two or more racial backgrounds. About 5.6% of the population was of Hispanic or Latino background.
Many households on the reservation have families. In 2000, about 45% of households had children under 18. The average household had about 3.4 people.
The age of people living there varied. About 36% were under 18 years old. About 25% were between 25 and 44 years old. The average age was 26 years old.
Education Opportunities
Students living on the Nisqually Reservation go to different schools. The area is split between two school districts. These are the North Thurston Public Schools and the Yelm Community Schools.
