Nisswa is a city located in Crow Wing County, Minnesota, United States. It is a small city with a population of about 1,967 people as of 2020. Nisswa is part of the Brainerd area and is very close to Gull Lake.

History of Nisswa

The area around Nisswa was first called Smiley Township in 1900. However, a local person named Leon Lum suggested a new name. He convinced the people living there to call it Nisswa. This name comes from the Ojibwe language word "nessawae," which means "in the middle" or "three."

Nisswa officially became a village in 1908. Later, it became a city on December 4, 1946. Today, Nisswa is a popular place for tourists to visit. People enjoy its many shops, resorts, and the beautiful lakes nearby. The Paul Bunyan State Trail, a path built on an old railroad line, also goes right through Nisswa.

Geography and Lakes

Nisswa covers an area of about 18.34 square miles (47.57 square kilometers). About 10.78 square miles (27.89 square kilometers) of this is land, and 7.56 square miles (19.67 square kilometers) is water.

The city is surrounded by many lakes and is part of what is known as the Brainerd Lakes Area. Some of the lakes you can find near Nisswa include Nisswa Lake, Roy Lake, Gull Lake, Lake Hubert, Clark Lake, Round Lake, and North Long Lake.

To get around Nisswa, you can use Minnesota Highway 371. Other important roads include County Roads 13, 18, 77, and 115.

Most students who live in Nisswa go to schools run by Brainerd Public Schools. Some students attend schools in the Pequot Lakes Public Schools district.
