No Rome's Musical Journey

Growing Up and Starting Music

Guendoline Rome Viray Gomez grew up in San Francisco del Monte in Manila, Philippines. His dad used to be a DJ, and his mom was a church singer. Music was a big part of his family!

He listened to many different kinds of music. Some of his favorite bands were My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. Later, he enjoyed electronic artists like Björk and Aphex Twin.

No Rome also loved visual art. He took photos with his father's camera. He spent a lot of time on websites like Flickr and Tumblr. He found inspiration for his own writing after reading poems by artists like Frank O'Hara.

His first performances were with a band called Rome and the Cats. His brother helped manage the band. Later, he chose the stage name "No Rome." This name came from a common reply when he said he was starting in music.

In 2012, No Rome, his brother Zeon, and Ethan Namoch started Young Liquid Gang (YLG). This was a group of musicians, artists, and designers. They worked together until 2015. One of the members, Leon Ordinario, became his live show drummer.

When he was 18, No Rome moved to London. He signed with the record label Dirty Hit.

Early Songs and EPs

No Rome released his first songs in 2013. These were "Dance With Me" and "United We Are." He also released an EP called Fantasy that year. An EP is like a mini-album with a few songs.

In 2014, he released "Heaven." This song was inspired by sad events in his life. The next year, he put out "Know U" and another EP, Hurry Home & Rest.

He worked at a call center for seven months. He used the money to buy music equipment. This helped him create more music easily. In 2017, he released "Blue Jeans" and "Seventeen." "Seventeen" was about a friend's failed romance.

No Rome sent his demo songs to Matty Healy from The 1975. Matty Healy liked his music and invited him to London. He then signed No Rome to his label, Dirty Hit.

In 2018, Matty Healy and George Daniel produced No Rome's EP, RIP Indo Hisashi. This EP featured "Narcissist," a song with The 1975. The 1975 later used parts of it for their song "TooTimeTooTimeTooTime." This song reached number 26 on the UK charts.

Healy and Daniel also produced No Rome's next EP, Crying in the Prettiest Places, in 2019. This EP reached number 14 on the UK R&B Albums Chart.

Recent Music and Albums

In January 2020, No Rome announced a mixtape called Samantha's TV. He was visiting the Philippines when the COVID-19 pandemic started. He got stuck there.

He spent time at his parents' house, then moved to an apartment. He decided to stop working on the mixtape and start fresh. He found that the lockdown helped him focus better on his music.

In 2021, No Rome, Charli XCX, and The 1975 released "Spinning." This song was a big hit, reaching number 94 in the UK. That same year, Forbes magazine included him on their "Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia 2021" list. This list highlights young, successful people.

Later in 2021, George Daniel and BJ Burton helped produce No Rome's album, It's All Smiles. He gave it an ironic name because the lyrics were actually sad. He also promoted the album with a zine (a small magazine) that had his own photos.

In May 2023, No Rome was featured on the song "Run Away With You" by Salute. He then released his own song "Brother." In August 2023, he released "Deep Diving," a song inspired by UK garage music.

On September 8, 2023, he released his mixtape Blueboy Must Die. In December 2023, he helped write and produce "Get Right" for Josh Cullen.

Influences and Inspiration

No Rome has faced health challenges that inspired some of his songs. For example, the song "Secret Beach" from his album It's All Smiles is about these experiences.

He has shared that his music is influenced by many artists. These include My Bloody Valentine, Nujabes, and the Avalanches. He also looks up to bands like Deftones and electronic artists like Goldie. He has mentioned that his "ultimate musical hero" is Kim Gordon.
