Noah Andrew Ringer (born November 18, 1996) is an American martial artist. He used to be a child actor. He is best known for playing Aang in the 2010 movie The Last Airbender. He also played Emmett in the film Cowboys & Aliens.

Noah Ringer's Early Life and Acting Career
Noah Ringer was born in Dallas, Texas. When he was ten years old, his mother signed him up for martial arts classes. He joined ATA Martial Arts in Carrollton, Texas. This is part of the American Taekwondo Association (ATA). Noah quickly showed he was very good at martial arts. He started competing in tournaments soon after. In December 2008, when he was twelve, Noah earned his first degree black belt.
Noah used to shave his head. Other students at his martial arts school called him "Avatar." They gave him this nickname after the character Aang from the TV show Avatar: The Last Airbender. Noah's taekwondo teacher, Master Eric Pechacek, started watching the show. He also saw how much Noah looked and acted like Aang. He showed the TV series to Noah, who instantly became a big fan.
How Noah Became Aang
In July 2008, Noah's teacher got an email from the ATA. It invited students to try out for the role of Aang in The Last Airbender movie. Master Pechacek told Noah to audition for the part. For his audition video, Noah dressed up like Aang. He used his Halloween costume from the year before. He performed a special martial arts routine. He also said a few lines from the script.
About a month after sending the video, Noah was asked to go to Philadelphia. There, he met with the movie director, M. Night Shyamalan. Another month later, he was offered the role! Noah had one month to get ready for filming. He took intense acting classes. He also started training in different kinds of martial arts. This training continued while they were making the movie.
Awards and Other Roles
In March 2011, Noah Ringer was nominated for an award. It was for Best Performance by a Young Actor. This was for the 32nd Annual Young Artist Awards. In May 2011, Noah won the "Coming of Age" Best Actor movie award. He won this for his role in The Last Airbender.
Noah also played Emmett Taggart in the movie Cowboys & Aliens. This film was a mix of sci-fi and western styles. It was directed by Jon Favreau.
Noah Ringer's Martial Arts Journey
Noah's first ATA tournament was the World Championships in Arkansas. He won first place in every event he entered. After seeing "extreme" routines there, Noah decided to try Extreme Martial Arts, or XMA. In XMA, he creates his own moves and chooses his own music. He became skilled with many Eastern weapons. This included the bō staff, which his character Aang uses.
During his first two years with the ATA, Noah competed in 25 tournaments. He won 100 medals, and 80 of them were gold! He was named "The Competitor of the Year" for the Texas region in February 2008. Noah also won the 2008-2009 Texas State Champion title. He won in five different categories. These included Traditional Forms, Traditional Weapons, Sparring, X-Treme Forms, and X-Treme Weapons.
Learning New Styles
For The Last Airbender movie, Noah learned new martial arts styles. He learned baguazhang, tai chi, and Wushu. These styles are known as "soft" styles. They are different from taekwondo, which is a "hard" style. Noah still trains in American taekwondo. In October 2010, he earned his second degree black belt. Noah helps teach other students in the ATA. He is part of their Leadership Program. He also does gymnastics and has started learning Choy Li Fut kung fu.
Noah Ringer's Personal Life
Noah Ringer was homeschooled. He has shared that he enjoys several TV shows. Some of his favorites include Avatar: The Last Airbender, Transformers: Prime, and The Spectacular Spider-Man. He also likes movies such as The Incredibles, Die Hard, and Saving Private Ryan.
