Noel McKoy (born around 1961 – died November 3, 2022) was a British singer. He was known for his soulful music. His songs mixed different styles like soul, gospel, funk, and Northern soul.
Noel McKoy also helped new artists. He created and ran "Dutch Pot new artist nights" in London for five years. More than 300 artists performed there early in their careers. Famous singers like Omar and Lynden David Hall also performed. McKoy said his music was inspired by artists like The Beatles and Chaka Khan. He was also inspired by leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela.
Noel McKoy: A Soulful Singer
Noel McKoy was born in South London. In the early 1990s, he sang with the band James Taylor Quartet. He also sang duets with many other artists. These included Juliet Roberts, Mica Paris, and Beverley Knight.
Noel McKoy released five solo albums. In 2007, he recorded new songs for producer Ian Levine. These songs were for the albums Northern Soul 2007 and Disco 2008. His sisters also sang on the Disco 2008 album.
In 2018, he was part of a documentary called Battersea Junction - Stories from the Winstanley and York Road Estates. This film was made by Wandsworth Heritage Service and children from Falconbrook Primary School. The documentary was shown on Together TV. It featured Noel McKoy's song "Family 2000" with Colorman. Noel McKoy passed away on November 3, 2022, at the age of 60.
His Musical Journey
Noel McKoy's music career began in 1989. He and his siblings released the songs "I'm Lucky" and "Family". His first album, Full Circle – Within A Social Soul, came out in 1993. Four years later, he released Mind Is the Keeper.
In 1998, he started his own record label, Right Track Records. He then released his third album, Please Take This Personal. His fourth solo album, Brighter Days, was released in 2009. This album included the songs "Jealousy" and the title track. In 2021, he worked with Brian Travers from UB40 and Patrick Anthony Tenyue. They released the song "Liberation" together.
