A Place Called Happy Canyon

Long ago, the Nolin area had a different name. People called it "Happy Canyon." This name came from Adam "Ad" W. Nye. He was an early settler in the 1860s. Nye chose the name because of the happy spirit of the people living there.

The famous Pendleton Round-Up later used this name. They named their indoor show "Happy Canyon" to remember this time. Adam Nye was also the County Sheriff from 1872 to 1874. A nearby community, Nye, was named after him.

In the past, Nolin was a busier place. It had important services for its residents.

A railroad line was built through Nolin. This line belonged to the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company. Today, it is part of the Union Pacific railroad. A strong steel bridge was built in 1907. It carries the railroad across the Umatilla River.

The Cunningham Sheep Ranch

Nolin is home to a very old ranch. The Cunningham Sheep Ranch started in the 1880s. Charles Cunningham founded it.

This ranch was once huge. It was one of the largest sheep-raising farms in the United States. Today, the ranch continues to raise sheep. They specialize in Rambouillet sheep. These sheep are known for their fine wool.
