Nordvorpommern (which means "North Western Pomerania") was a district in the northern part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It was located right on the coast of the Baltic Sea. The district also surrounded the coastal city of Stralsund.

Geography of Nordvorpommern

Along the coast of Nordvorpommern, there is a long piece of land sticking out into the sea. This is called a peninsula, and its name is the Darß.

Between the Darß peninsula and the main land, there is a very shallow body of water. This is known as a lagoon. Both the lagoon and the Darß peninsula are part of a special protected area. This area is called the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park. It's a beautiful place with lots of nature.

History of Nordvorpommern

For a long time, until the year 1819, the area of Nordvorpommern was controlled by Sweden. After that, it became a part of Prussia, which was a powerful German kingdom.

The modern district of Nordvorpommern was created in 1994. This happened when three older districts joined together. These old districts were Grimmen, Ribnitz-Damgarten, and Stralsund.

What the Coat of Arms Means

The coat of arms for Nordvorpommern has two special creatures on it. These creatures are called griffins. A griffin is a mythical animal with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle.

  • The golden griffin on the left side of the shield was a symbol for the Princes of Rostock.
  • The black griffin on the right side was used by the Dukes of Pomerania. They also used a black griffin as their symbol.

This coat of arms was officially approved on December 3, 1997.

Towns and Municipalities

The district of Nordvorpommern was made up of several towns and smaller communities. Some towns were "Amt-free," meaning they managed themselves. Other smaller towns and villages were part of larger groups called Ämter. An Amt is like a local administrative group that helps manage several smaller communities together.

Here are some of the main towns and municipalities:

  • Amt-free towns:
    • Grimmen
    • Marlow
  • Amt-free municipalities:
    • Süderholz
    • Zingst

The district also included several Ämter, each with its own group of towns and villages. Some examples of these Ämter included Altenpleen, Barth, and Ribnitz-Damgarten. Each Amt had a main town where its administration was located.
