Norman Fell (born Norman Noah Feld; March 24, 1924 – December 14, 1998) was an American actor. He was well-known for his roles in movies and on television. Many people remember him as Mr. Roper, the landlord on the popular TV show Three's Company. He also appeared in famous films like Ocean's 11 (1960), The Graduate (1967), and Bullitt (1968).

His Early Life

Norman Fell was born on March 24, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents were Samuel and Edna Feld. His father came from Austria, and his mother's parents were from Russia. His family was Jewish.

He went to Central High School of Philadelphia. After high school, he served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He was a tail gunner on a B-25 Mitchell plane. After the war, he studied drama at Temple University. He also improved his acting skills at places like Actors Studio.

Becoming an Actor

Norman Fell started his acting career in the mid-1950s. He often played interesting supporting characters in many films. He was known for his ability to play different kinds of roles.

Famous Film Roles

Fell appeared in several well-known movies. He was in the original Ocean's 11 with the famous Rat Pack group. He also had a role in the comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

Other notable films include PT 109, where he acted alongside Cliff Robertson. He also appeared in Mike Nichols' movie The Graduate. Later, he worked with Steve McQueen in Bullitt and was in Catch-22. In 1992, he played a hotel owner in the comedy film Hexed.

TV Star: Mr. Roper

Norman Fell was very famous for his television work. From 1977 to 1979, he played Stanley Roper on the hit TV show Three's Company. His character, Mr. Roper, was the landlord of the main characters.

His role as Mr. Roper was so popular that he got his own spin-off show. This show was called The Ropers. He starred in it with Audra Lindley, who played his wife, Helen. The Ropers aired for two seasons from 1979 to 1980.

Fell won a Golden Globe Award in 1979 for his role in Three's Company. He was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his serious acting in the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man. His last TV appearance was a small role as Mr. Roper on an episode of the show Ellen in 1997.

His Family Life

Norman Fell was married and had a family. He had two daughters, Tracy and Mara, with his second wife. He also adopted a son with his third wife, Karen Weingard.

Later Years and Passing

Norman Fell continued acting until the late 1990s. He passed away on December 14, 1998, at the age of 74. He died from bone marrow cancer at a retirement home for people in the entertainment industry.
