Exploring Norman Island Today
Norman Island is a special place in the British Virgin Islands. It's part of a group called the "Little Sisters". These islands are smaller and drier than others nearby.
An Uninhabited Island
Even though it's a popular spot, no people live on Norman Island permanently. It's owned by a private person named Henry Jarecki. The island is about 600 acres big and 2.5 miles long.
The Bight: A Safe Harbor
One of the best features of Norman Island is a large harbor called the Bight. It's a very safe place for boats to anchor. This makes it a favorite stop for people sailing through the area.
Underwater Caves and Snorkeling Fun
Norman Island is a top spot for tourists and people on cruises. This is because of three amazing water-level caves. These caves are found at the bottom of cliffs on the western side of the Bight.
The caves are perfect for snorkeling. If you swim deep enough into them, it gets dark. This makes it feel like a special night dive, even during the day!
Island Restaurants
While no one lives on the island, there are two restaurants for visitors. They are called Pirates Bight and The Club. For a while, a unique boat called the Willy T was also anchored here. It was a floating bar and restaurant.
In 2017, a big storm called Hurricane Irma damaged the Willy T. But a new Willy T was built! After some changes, it returned to its original spot on Norman Island.
Norman Island's Pirate Legacy
Many people believe that Norman Island was the real-life inspiration for Treasure Island. This famous pirate novel was written by Robert Louis Stevenson.
A Real-Life Treasure Story
The story of Treasure Island seems to happen around the same time a real treasure was found on Norman Island. This treasure came from a sunken ship called the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. This connection makes the island even more exciting!
Hunting for Hidden Treasure
Norman Island has many hidden bays, caves, and even shipwrecks. Because of this, many tourists still visit hoping to find treasure. The people who run tours in the British Virgin Islands are happy to let visitors keep dreaming of finding pirate gold!
