History of Norrtälje
Norrtälje has a very old history, going back to the Iron Age. More than 225 ancient sites have been found in the area. People believe three old castles once stood in the villages of Nordrona, Solbacka, and Knutby.
The town was first mentioned in 1219 as Tälje. Later, its name officially became Norrtälje. This helped tell it apart from another town called Tälje in the same province, which is now known as Södertälje.
King Gustav II Adolf officially founded the town of Norra Tällie in 1622. This happened during the Thirty Years' War. The town's coat of arms, which shows an upside-down anchor, was created in the same year. This was when the town received its official permission to be a town, called a charter.
In 1719, a Russian army attacked and burned down a large part of the town center. The new stone church was not finished until 1726. It took another four years for the city hall to be completed.
Norrtälje had a narrow gauge railway station from 1884 to 1969. This railway was called Roslagsbanan. Today, SL buses serve the town. They are part of the public transport in Stockholm system.
The town also has an interesting industrial past. You can learn about it at the Pythagoras Mechanical Workshop Museum. This museum is located in an old factory that used to make hot bulb engines.
Climate in Norrtälje
Norrtälje has a climate that is mostly humid continental climate. This means it has warm summers and cold winters. It also has some influence from the sea, making it a bit like an oceanic climate. Summers can be very different, sometimes very warm and sometimes quite cool.
The official weather station for Norrtälje was active until 1984. The weather information below comes from Svanberga. This village is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of Norrtälje. Svanberga is a bit further inland, so it can get colder than Norrtälje itself. However, high temperatures are usually similar. Norrtälje is generally colder than Stockholm and other coastal areas further south. It also gets more snow.
