North Jeolla Province, also called Jeollabuk-do (전라북도; 全羅北道), is a province in the southwest part of South Korea. This area became a separate province in 1896. It was formed from the northern part of the older Jeolla Province. The main city and capital of North Jeolla Province is Jeonju.

What is the History of North Jeolla?

This area has a long and interesting history. During the time of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, it was a central part of a kingdom called Mahan. Later, Mahan became part of Baekje, one of the three powerful kingdoms.

In the Unified Silla period, important towns grew here. These included Wansan-ju, which is now the city of Jeonju. Another key town was Namwon-gyeong, known today as Namwon.

When King Seongjong of Goryeo ruled, he divided the country into ten dos (provinces). Jeolla-do was first called Gangnam-do. Much later, during the Joseon Dynasty, it was finally named Jeolla-do.
