The North Marine Road Ground is a famous cricket ground in Scarborough, England. It is also known as Queen's. This ground is the home of the Scarborough Cricket Club. It also hosts the special Scarborough Festival each year. The Yorkshire County Cricket Club plays many games here too.

The stadium can hold up to 11,500 people. Its record attendance was 22,946 fans in 1947. That's when Yorkshire played against Derbyshire. The two ends of the ground are called the Peasholm Park End and the Trafalgar Square End.

History of the Cricket Ground

Cricket games first started at this ground in 1863. Before that, matches were played at Castle Hill in Scarborough since 1849. The land for the North Marine Road Ground was called Jackson's field.

Early County Cricket Matches

The Yorkshire team has played here since 1878. The first County Championship game was held in 1896. In that game, Yorkshire beat Leicestershire by 162 runs. Today, Scarborough is one of the main places for county cricket in Yorkshire. The only other regular venue is Headingley Stadium in Leeds.

The Scarborough Festival

The ground is famous for the end-of-season Scarborough Festival. This festival was created to attract tourists visiting the seaside town. During the festival, different teams play various types of cricket games. These include friendly matches, championship games, and one-day cricket.

The Fenner Trophy was a special one-day competition. It featured four counties and ran from 1971 to 1996. The festival celebrated its 100th year in 1986. Sir Len Hutton, a famous cricketer, was the president that year.

Playing Conditions

The North Marine Road Ground is known for its fast outfield. This means the ball travels quickly across the grass. The pitch often helps spin bowlers. This makes the game exciting for both players and fans.

The ground hosts Senior Premier League matches. It has also held important games for the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board). These include under-19 matches and Women's Test matches.

International Cricket Venue

The ground has hosted two One Day Internationals (ODIs). England played against the West Indies in 1976. They also played against New Zealand in 1978. In 2005, Yorkshire agreed to keep playing at the ground until 2010.

Ground Improvements Over Time

The ground is located close to the sea. It has a raised cricket pavilion that was built in 1895. This building cost £2,150. A new seating area was added in 1902 and made bigger over the next five years.

A concrete stand was built in 1926 for £6,700. In 1956, a new West Stand was put up, costing £16,000. More recently, the Jack Knowles Building was finished in 1995. This cost £210,000. New all-weather nets and a press box were built in 1997 for £50,000. The tea rooms were also updated in 1998 for £95,000.

In 2010, The Guardian newspaper named North Marine Road their 'Ground of the Year'.

Other Uses of the Stadium

Throughout its history, the stadium has been used for more than just cricket. It once had a Velodrome for cycling races. It also hosted athletics events. The ground was the first home for the Scarborough F.C. football team. More recently, it has been a place for Scarborough Hockey Club games. The pavilion facilities are used all year for different events and functions.

International Centuries Scored

Only one century (100 runs or more) has been scored in an ODI match at this ground.
