History of Cricket at North Marine Road
When Cricket Started in Scarborough
Cricket first came to this ground in 1863. Before that, games were played at Castle Hill in Scarborough since 1849. The Yorkshire County Cricket Club has played here since 1878. Their first game was against MCC, who won by 7 wickets.
First County Championship Game
The first official County Championship game was held here in 1896. Yorkshire won that match against Leicestershire by 162 runs. Today, Scarborough is one of only two places in Yorkshire where county cricket is regularly played. The other is Headingley Stadium in Leeds.
The Scarborough Festival Tradition
The ground is famous for the end-of-season Scarborough Festival. This festival was created to attract tourists visiting the seaside town. It featured touring teams, county teams, and Yorkshire playing different types of cricket games. A special one-day competition, the Fenner Trophy, ran from 1971 to 1996. The festival celebrated its 100th year in 1986.
Playing Conditions at the Ground
What Makes the Pitch Special?
North Marine Road is known for its fast outfield. This means the ball travels quickly once it hits the grass. The pitch itself is often good for spin bowlers. Spin bowlers make the ball turn in the air.
Types of Games Played Here
The ground hosts many different matches. These include Senior Premier League games. It has also held important games for young players (under-19) and Women's Test matches.
International Cricket Matches
England's One Day Internationals
This ground has hosted two One Day Internationals (ODIs). England played against the West Indies here in 1976. They also played against New Zealand in 1978. These were exciting international matches.
Ground Improvements Over Time
The ground is located close to the sea. A raised cricket pavilion was built in 1895 for £2,150. More seating was added in 1902 and expanded over the next five years. A concrete stand was built in 1926 for £6,700. In 1956, a new West Stand was put up, costing £16,000.
More recently, the Jack Knowles Building was finished in 1995. It cost £210,000. New all-weather nets and a press box were built in 1997 for £50,000. The tea rooms were also updated in 1998 for £95,000. In 2010, The Guardian newspaper named North Marine Road their 'Ground of the Year'.
Other Sports and Events
Beyond Cricket
Over the years, the stadium has hosted more than just cricket. It once had a Velodrome for cycling races. It also held athletics events. It was the first home for Scarborough F.C., a football club. More recently, it has been a place for Scarborough Hockey Club games. The pavilion is used all year for various events.
International Centuries Scored
A Special Batting Achievement
Only one One Day International century has been scored at this ground. A century means a player scored 100 runs or more in one game.
