History of North Olmsted

The land where North Olmsted now stands was once part of a French colony called New France. In 1763, it became part of Great Britain. Later, in the late 1700s, it joined the Connecticut Western Reserve in the Northwest Territory. The Connecticut Land Company bought this land in 1795.

In 1806, a wealthy sea captain named Aaron Olmsted bought a large area of land. This land included what is now North Olmsted, Olmsted Falls, and Olmsted Township. The price was $30,000.

The first settlers arrived in 1815 from New England. They were led by David Johnson Stearns. The area was first unofficially called Plum Creek Township in 1807. In 1814, surveyors named it Kingston. On April 14, 1823, the people officially organized it as Lenox Township.

In 1826, Aaron Olmsted's son, Charles Hyde Olmsted, made an offer. He said he would donate books from his father's collection if the town changed its name to Olmsted. This was to honor his father. The town agreed, and these books became famous as the Ox Cart Library. The city of North Olmsted was officially formed in 1909.
