North Sunderland is a charming fishing village located right on the coast of Northumberland, England. It sits next to another village called Seahouses. In 2011, about 1,959 people lived in the area that includes North Sunderland.

What's in a Name?

The name North Sunderland has a cool history! It probably comes from Old English words. The first part, sūðer, means "south" or "southern". The second part, land, simply means "land". So, the name means "southern land". It's like the name Sutherland in Scotland, which also means "southern land". This village is much smaller than the city of Sunderland, which is about 60 miles south.

A Look Back at History

North Sunderland started as a village a bit inland from the sea. But then, people began to build a harbour on the coast nearby. This made the village grow a lot! Many houses were built, especially for people working in the herring fishery. Herring is a type of fish.

As more people came to work by the sea, the area around these "sea-houses" became very busy. Eventually, this coastal part became known as Seahouses. Today, it's hard to tell where North Sunderland ends and Seahouses begins. They are like one big, friendly community by the sea.

Who Runs the Village?

North Sunderland and Seahouses are part of a local area called a civil parish. This parish is also named North Sunderland. It's part of the Northumberland County Council, which is like the local government for the whole county.

For national elections, the village is in the Berwick-upon-Tweed area. This area chooses someone to represent them in the UK Parliament. The person who represents them is called a Member of Parliament (MP). Currently, the MP for this area is Anne-Marie Trevelyan, who belongs to the Conservative Party.
