North Webster is a small town located in Kosciusko County, Indiana, in the United States. It's part of Tippecanoe Township. In 2020, about 998 people lived there. The National Weather Service has an office north of town, near Syracuse.

History of North Webster

North Webster was officially planned and settled in 1837. It was named after Daniel Webster, a famous American statesman. The town's post office has been open since 1879.

A special building called the Robert Orr Polygonal Barn is in North Webster. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This means it's an important historical site.

Mermaid Festival

One of the biggest events is the Mermaid Festival. The North Webster Lions Club hosts it every year in the last week of June. It's their largest fundraiser.

The festival has many exciting parts:

  • The Cutie King & Queen Pageant, where young kids can participate.
  • The Cutie parade.
  • The main Mermaid Parade.

There's also a carnival with rides and games. A big parade happens on Saturday afternoon to celebrate the end of the festival. The festival usually ends with fireworks, though sometimes there are laser light shows or video slideshows instead. In 2015, the festival celebrated its 70th year!

North Webster has several small businesses. You can find antique shops and bait shops for fishing. There are also larger stores like CVS, Dollar General, and Ace Hardware.

A unique building in the middle of town looks like a castle. It used to be home to the International Palace of Sports.

Since 1998, the National Weather Service has had an office in North Webster. This office helps forecast weather for northern Indiana, southeastern Michigan, and northwestern Ohio.

The Dixie Boat

North Webster is home to a very special boat called The Dixie. It's Indiana’s oldest stern wheel paddle boat. The Dixie has been giving tours on Webster Lake since 1929! Many generations of families have enjoyed rides on this historic boat.

The Dixie was owned by private people until 2007. Then, a non-profit group called Dixie Sternwheeler Inc. (DSI) took over. DSI still operates the boat for regular summer cruises. These cruises run from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day. You can also book the boat for special events like weddings or company parties.

Regular cruises last about 75 minutes. They happen every evening from Monday to Saturday, and in the afternoon and evening on Sundays. Many cruises play old-time music and share stories about the area, the lake, and The Dixie's history.
