Northern Ireland has been a part of the Commonwealth Games for a long time. They have competed in 19 out of 21 games so far. Their first appearance was in 1934.
Northern Ireland did not join the games in 1930. Back then, there was one team representing all of Ireland. They also missed the games in 1950.

Northern Ireland at the Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games are a big sports event. Athletes from countries and territories of the Commonwealth of Nations compete. Northern Ireland has its own team for these games.
This is different from the Olympic Games. In the Olympics, Northern Ireland athletes usually compete as part of the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team. However, some athletes from Northern Ireland can also choose to represent the Ireland team in the Olympics.
The Northern Ireland Commonwealth Games Council manages Northern Ireland's participation. They help organize and support the athletes.

Symbols of Team NI
When the Northern Ireland team competes, they use special symbols. These include their flag, their victory song, and their logo.
The Ulster Banner
The team uses the Ulster Banner as its national flag. This flag was once used by the Government of Northern Ireland. You might also see this flag used by the Northern Ireland national football team.
Londonderry Air
When a Northern Ireland athlete wins a gold medal, they play a special song. This song is called "Londonderry Air". It is their victory anthem.
