Northfield is a village and a special area called a census-designated place (CDP) in Vermont, United States. It is located in Washington County. A CDP is a place that the government counts for population information, even if it doesn't have its own official town government.
In 2020, about 3,757 people lived in Northfield. The entire town of Northfield had a population of 5,918 people. The old village of Northfield joined with the larger town of Northfield in 2014. Today, the CDP includes the former village and other small communities like Northfield Center and South Northfield.
About Northfield
Northfield is a central part of the town of Northfield. It sits in the southern part of Washington County. The village is nestled in the valley of the Dog River. This river flows north and eventually joins the Winooski River.
Where is Northfield?
Northfield is bordered on its northern side by the village of Northfield Falls. It stretches south all the way to South Northfield. A well-known school, Norwich University, is located in the southern part of Northfield, specifically in Northfield Center.
Roads and Travel
Vermont Route 12 is the main street in Northfield. It goes north-northeast for about 10 miles (16 km) to Montpelier. Montpelier is the capital city of Vermont. If you travel south on Route 12, you will go through Brookfield Gulf. This route leads about 17 miles (27 km) to Randolph.
Another important road is Vermont Route 12A. This road starts from Route 12 in Northfield Center. It offers a different route to the west. Route 12A also leads to Randolph, about 21 miles (34 km) away.
