History of Northrop

Northrop was officially planned and mapped out in 1899. It was named after Cyrus Northrop. He was a very important person who used to be the president of the University of Minnesota.

A post office opened in Northrop in 1900. It served the community for many years. However, the post office closed down in 1972.

Geography of Northrop

Northrop is located in the northeastern part of Martin County. It is about 7 miles (11 km) north of Fairmont. Fairmont is the main city and county seat of Martin County. Northrop is also about 7 miles (11 km) south of Truman.

Minnesota State Highway 15 runs just half a mile east of Northrop. This highway connects Northrop to both Fairmont and Truman. The city of Northrop covers a total area of about 0.13 square miles (0.34 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
