Station History
How Novena Station Got Its Name
When this station was first planned, its temporary name was Thomson Road. However, in 1985, it was officially renamed Novena. The name "Novena" comes from a special type of prayer. These prayers are said for nine days in a row. This tradition is important at a nearby Catholic church, the Church of Saint Alphonsus, which is often called Novena Church. The word "Novena" itself comes from the Latin word "Novem," meaning "nine."
Changes to Payment Services
Starting from June 23, 2018, the passenger service center at Novena MRT station stopped accepting cash payments. This means that if you need to buy tickets or top up your travel card, you'll need to use other payment methods like cards or digital payments.
Cultural Connections
The area where Novena MRT station is located used to be a site for a Jewish cemetery. This shows how different cultures and histories are part of Singapore's landscape.
