The Church of Our Lady of the Mount Carmel (Spanish: Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Montevideo, Uruguay. People often call it Iglesia del Cordón. It is a special place for many people in Uruguay.

History of the Church
The first church building was started on October 1, 1835. This means it has a long history in Montevideo.
Important Leaders
From 1874 to 1890, a priest named Mariano Soler worked here. He later became the very first Archbishop of Montevideo. An archbishop is a very important leader in the Catholic Church, overseeing many churches in a region.
Building the Current Church
The church you see today was finished in 1924. It was designed by an architect named Elzeario Boix. He built it in the Neo-Romanesque style. This style looks back to old Roman buildings with strong, rounded arches.
Inside and Outside the Church
The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This is a very popular way to honor the Virgin Mary.
Special Altars Inside
Inside the church, you can find different altars. One altar is for Saint Joseph of Cupertino. He is known as the patron saint of students who are struggling. Another altar is for the Virgin of the Thirty-Three. She is the special patron saint of all of Uruguay.
The Oldest Cruceiro
Outside the church, there is a special stone cross called a Galician cruceiro. This cruceiro was made in the year 1800. It is the oldest one of its kind in all of Uruguay.
