Discovering the Cordón Church
The very first church here was started on October 1, 1835. It was a place for people to gather and worship.
From 1874 to 1890, a priest named Mariano Soler worked there. He later became the first Archbishop of Montevideo. An Archbishop is a very important leader in the Catholic Church.
Building the Current Church
The church you see today was built much later, in 1924. It was designed by an architect named Elzeario Boix. He used a style called Neo-Romanesque. This style looks back to old Roman buildings, often with round arches and strong, simple shapes.
The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. This is a very popular way to honor the Virgin Mary.
Inside the Church
Inside the church, you can find different altars. One altar is dedicated to Saint Joseph of Cupertino. He is known as the patron saint of students who are struggling.
Another altar honors the Virgin of the Thirty-Three. She is considered the special patron saint of all of Uruguay.
The Oldest Stone Cross
Outside the church, there is a special stone cross called a Galician cruceiro. It was made around the year 1800. This cruceiro is the oldest one of its kind in all of Uruguay.
