Nuevo Casas Grandes is a city in northern Mexico. It is the main city of the Nuevo Casas Grandes Municipality. You can find it in the northwestern part of the Chihuahua state. The city sits in a wide, green valley. The Casas Grandes or San Miguel river flows through it. Close by are the tall mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental.

How Many People Live Here?
In 2010, about 55,553 people lived in Nuevo Casas Grandes. This was more than the 50,863 people counted in 2005. The city was started in the 1870s.
Nuevo Casas Grandes got its name from an older town nearby. That town is called Casas Grandes. A train station was built in the area. Soon, many people moved closer to the station. Many early residents were Native American groups. They were similar to those living in the American Southwest.
A Look at History
The area around Nuevo Casas Grandes is very old and full of history. About five miles southwest of the city is an important archaeological site. This place is called Paquimé. It means "Big Houses" in Spanish. You can visit the Paquimé Museum there.
Nuevo Casas Grandes is also famous for a nearby village called Mata Ortiz. This village is known for its beautiful Mata Ortiz pottery. This pottery style brings back old traditions from the ancient Paquimé people.

Nuevo Casas Grandes has a semi-arid climate. This means it gets hot summers and mild winters. Spring and autumn are warm. The area gets a good amount of rain in summer. In winter, it often has air frosts, which means the air gets cold enough for frost.

Local Culture and Communities
Nuevo Casas Grandes is home to a Catholic diocese. Nearby, you'll find communities of Mennonites and Mormons. Both groups often speak two languages. Spanish is their second language.
Most Mormons in the area are of Mexican descent. They speak Spanish as their main language. The Mennonites are Old Colony Mennonites. They speak a German language called Plautdietsch at home. They also speak Standard German and Spanish. Mormons of American descent usually speak English.
As Nuevo Casas Grandes has grown, it now connects with Colonia Dublán. This is a Mormon community to the north. Many people in the area grow fruit in orchards. They grow peaches, apples, pears, and pecans. You can also see trees like ash, cypress, and pine. Farmers also grow wheat and raise cattle.
