History of Nuevo Progreso
Nuevo Progreso was first created on October 17, 1889. Back then, it was called "El Progreso." A few years later, in 1898, a new president named Manuel Estrada Cabrera came into power. He ruled Guatemala for a very long time, about 22 years. Many places and buildings were named after him during this time. So, "El Progreso" was renamed "Estrada Cabrera" in his honor.
In 1908, the town's name changed again. This time, it was called "San Joaquín." This name was chosen to honor the president's mother, Joaquina Cabrera, who had passed away. This change happened during a special event called the Fiestas Minervalias on November 4, 1908.
Finally, on May 3, 1920, the town got its current name, "Nuevo Progreso." This happened after President Estrada Cabrera was no longer in power. The new president, Carlos Herrera y Luna, ordered that all names linked to Estrada Cabrera and his mother be changed. That's how "San Joaquín" became "Nuevo Progreso," which means "New Progress."
