Nuffield Place is a beautiful old house in the countryside of Oxfordshire, England. It's located in the Chiltern Hills, near the village of Nuffield. This historic home is now looked after by the National Trust. It's about 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Wallingford.
A Home for Lord Nuffield
Nuffield Place was completed in 1914. It became famous because Sir William Morris, who later became known as Viscount Nuffield, lived there. He was a very important person in British industry.
Lord Nuffield had the house made bigger in 1933. He lived there for many years, until he passed away in 1963. He was buried nearby at Holy Trinity Parish Church in the village.
Lord Nuffield's Legacy
When Lord Nuffield died, he left Nuffield Place and everything inside it to Nuffield College, Oxford. He wanted it to be a museum. Later, the college gave the house and some of the land to the National Trust. This means visitors can now explore the house and learn about Lord Nuffield's life.
Inside Nuffield Place
The house is full of interesting things that belonged to Lord Nuffield. He loved clocks, and you can see eight of them in his bedroom!
His bedroom also has a tiny workshop hidden in a cupboard. It contains tools for working with metal, like a vice. You can even see a jar with Lord Nuffield's own preserved appendix inside! These personal touches make the house feel like he just stepped out.
