A Look Back: Oakland's History
Oakland got its name in 1859. A pioneer named William Radford chose the name because there were many beautiful oak trees in the area. The city was officially recognized in 1977.

Oakland is located at 37°2′30″N 86°14′58″W / 37.04167°N 86.24944°W. The city covers about 1.4 square miles (3.6 square kilometers) of land.
It is situated northeast of Bowling Green. You can find it near U.S. Route 68 to the south and extending towards U.S. Route 31W to the north. Interstate 65 also passes just south of Oakland. The city of Smiths Grove is located right to the east.
