Oatlands is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is about 23 kilometers north-west of the Sydney city center. This area is part of Western Sydney and is managed by the City of Parramatta.

The suburb stretches from the south-east near Kissing Point Road to the north-west, bordering Pennant Hills Road and the North Rocks area.

History of Oatlands

The name Oatlands comes from Oatlands House. This was one of the first big homes built in the Parramatta area. It was built in the 1830s by Percy Simpson.

Some people think the name comes from the first time oats were planted in Australia. However, this isn't confirmed. It's more likely the name was inspired by Oatlands Park in England. This park was near the lands of Lord Dundas, who the nearby suburb of Dundas is named after.

In 1840, James Bettington bought the land. He used it for sheep farming. Today, Oatlands House is a popular place for events. The land around it became the Oatlands Golf Course, which opened in 1931. Oatlands officially became a suburb in 1991. Before that, it was known as Dundas West.

The post office in the area was called Dundas West Post Office when it opened in 1967. It was renamed Oatlands Post Office in 1993.

In 1997, Oatlands was used as a filming location for the children's movie The Wiggles Movie. The opening scenes of The Magic Club were shot there.

The club is well-known in Sydney. A former professional golfer, Brett Ogle, has called it Australia's best par 70 course.

Another professional golfer, Peter Lonard, started his career at this club. He was part of their cadet program. He also worked as the club professional for several years.

Oatlands also includes an area known as Burnside. This was once the site of Burnside Homes. These were children's homes started by Sir James Burns in 1911. The buildings are no longer used as children's homes. However, the area is still the headquarters for Uniting Care Burnside. This is an agency of the Uniting Church in Australia.

The name Burnside is also used by Burnside Public School. This school was built on land that belonged to the trust. The area now has many new housing developments, such as Burnside Gardens Estate.
