It's part of Marengo County. Long ago, Octagon even had its own post office, but it's not there anymore.
A Look Back at Octagon
The name Octagon comes from a special church. After the American Civil War, a man named George Washington Barkley and his sons built the Bethlehem Baptist Church. This first church building had eight sides, like an octagon shape! That's how the community got its unique name.
In the past, Octagon was a busier place. It had another church, a Methodist one. There was also a two-story school where kids learned. People could buy things at the general store. Farmers used a cotton gin to process cotton and a grist mill to grind grain. Today, only the Bethlehem Baptist Church still stands.
