What is Odd and the Frost Giants About?
This book tells the tale of a young Norse boy named Odd. His father, a woodcutter, sadly drowned during a Viking raid. Odd's Scottish mother later remarries, but her new husband doesn't treat Odd very well.
Odd's Journey Begins
One day, the winter seems to go on forever, much longer than it should. Odd decides to leave his village and explore the forest. There, he meets three unusual animals: a fox, an eagle, and a bear. The bear has its paw stuck in a tree, and Odd bravely helps to free it.
Odd starts to feed the bear regularly. Soon, he learns a big secret: these are not ordinary animals! They are actually the powerful Norse gods Loki, Odin, and Thor.
The Gods' Problem
The gods have been turned into animals and kicked out of their home, Asgard. This happened because a huge Frost Giant tricked Loki. The Giant took Thor's mighty hammer by pretending to be a woman. With the hammer, the Frost Giant took over Asgard and caused the never-ending winter.
Odd realizes the gods are helpless and can't feed themselves. He feels he must help them, even though he is just a boy.
Traveling to Asgard
Odd decides to join the stranded gods on a journey to Asgard. Once they arrive, Thor leads Odd to Mimir's Well. This magical well gives Odd great wisdom. He also sees a vision of his parents when they were young.
Odd then bravely speaks with the Frost Giant. He learns that the Giant's brother built the walls of Asgard. But the gods tricked him out of his payment, and Thor even killed him. Odd uses his new wisdom to convince the Giant to return home.
The Aftermath
In return for his help, the goddess Freya heals Odd's injured leg, though it can't be fully fixed. Odin also gives him a special staff. Odd then returns to Midgard, the human world. He is a bit bigger than before because of drinking from Mimir's Well. As the long winter finally ends, Odd is reunited with his mother.
