Olavo Luiz Pimentel de Carvalho (29 April 1947 – 24 January 2022) was a Brazilian author, former astrologer, and journalist. He was known for sharing his strong opinions on politics and philosophy. From 2005 until his death, he lived in the United States, near Richmond, Virginia.
He began publishing about politics, literature, and philosophy in the 1980s. He became more widely known in Brazil from the 1990s. He wrote columns for major Brazilian newspapers like O Globo. In the 2000s, he started using blogs and social media. He shared his conservative and anti-communist ideas this way. In the late 2010s, he became very important in Brazilian public discussions. People called him the "intellectual father of the new right." He was also seen as a key thinker for Jair Bolsonaro, though he didn't like that label.
Carvalho's books and articles shared some ideas that were called conspiracy theories or false information. He was also accused of promoting ideas that went against experts and traditional learning. He saw himself as someone who questioned modern ways of thinking. He was interested in the history of philosophy, revolutionary movements, and different religions. Some philosophers did not agree with his views.

Professional Life
Carvalho worked as an astrologer in the 1980s. He learned about astrology from teachers like Juan Alfredo César Müller. From the 1970s to the 2000s, he wrote for many Brazilian magazines and newspapers. These included Bravo!, O Globo, and Folha de S.Paulo.
In 2002, Carvalho started a website called Maskless Media (Mídia Sem Máscara). This website aimed to observe and comment on the news media. He also hosted a show called True Outspeak on BlogTalkRadio from 2006 to 2013. In 2019, he wrote a weekly column for the newspaper Diário do Comércio. He also taught philosophy through an online course to over 2,000 students. He helped introduce important conservative philosophers like Eric Voegelin to Portuguese readers. Besides his newspaper articles and many online posts, he wrote 32 books. Many of these books were collections of his earlier writings.
Carvalho founded the Inter-American Institute for Philosophy, Government, and Social Thought in 2009. He was its president. He worked with other thinkers through this institute. The institute closed in 2018.
His Influence on Jair Bolsonaro's Presidency
Olavo de Carvalho became a very influential person during the time Jair Bolsonaro was president. Bolsonaro became interested in Carvalho's ideas around 2013. In 2014, Bolsonaro and Carvalho began sharing live video chats. These chats were shown on politically conservative YouTube channels. By 2017, Carvalho was often called Bolsonaro's "ideologue," meaning he was a key thinker for him. However, Carvalho did not agree with this title.
After Bolsonaro was elected, he was seen next to one of Carvalho's books in his first live speech on Facebook. Many people saw this as a sign of Carvalho's influence. It was also believed that Carvalho influenced Bolsonaro's choice of two important Ministers. These were Ricardo Vélez Rodríguez for Education and Ernesto Araújo for Foreign Affairs.
In November 2018, after the Brazilian presidential election, Carvalho said he would accept the role of Brazilian ambassador to the United States if Bolsonaro offered it. However, in February 2019, Carvalho had disagreements with some important people in Bolsonaro's government. This included the Vice-President, Hamilton Mourão. Carvalho accused Mourão of being a "traitor." Mourão did not agree with these criticisms.
Death
Olavo de Carvalho's family announced his death on social media on January 24, 2022. This was eight days after he tested positive for COVID-19. His family's statement did not say what caused his death. However, his daughter Heloísa stated it was from coronavirus. His personal doctor said it was not COVID-19. The doctor officially stated his death was caused by breathing problems. These were linked to emphysema, heart failure, bacterial pneumonia, and a general infection. Olavo was known for questioning vaccines and the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic. He often shared information about COVID-19 on social media. According to his family, he passed away at a hospital outside of Richmond, Virginia. He is buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia.
Personal Life
When he passed away, Olavo de Carvalho left behind his wife, eight children, and eighteen grandchildren.
His eldest daughter, Heloisa de Carvalho Martins Arriba, shared some concerns about her father. She wrote a letter that was later shared on Facebook. His other children and Olavo himself did not agree with her statements. Olavo started a lawsuit against her.
Olavo de Carvalho reportedly confessed his sins to a Roman Catholic priest. He also received the last rites before he died.
