How Canby Got Its Name
The town was named to honor General Edward Canby. He was a military leader involved in the Modoc War. During a peace meeting, he was shot by the Modoc tribal leader, Captain Jack. This event led to a famous siege at Captain Jack's Stronghold.
Early Industries and Logging
For many years, Canby was a busy place for the timber industry. Until the late 1940s, it was home to the Big Lakes Box Company. It also served as a supply point for the Big Lakes Logging Camp. This camp was located in the Adin Mountains nearby.
