History of Old Washington Village

The village of Old Washington has had a few different names over the years. George and Henry Beymer started the village in 1805. At first, it was known by two names: Beymerstown and New Washington.
In 1829, it officially became a village called Washington. This happened soon after the National Road was built through the area. Later, the name was changed to Old Washington. This was done to avoid confusion with another city in Ohio called Washington, which is now known as Washington Court House.
Morgan's Raid in 1863
In July 1863, during the American Civil War, Old Washington saw a small battle. This was part of a larger event called Morgan's Raid. A group of Confederate soldiers, led by General John Hunt Morgan, rode through Ohio.
They caused some trouble in several villages in Guernsey County, including Old Washington. However, Union cavalry (soldiers on horseback) soon caught up with them. Three Confederate soldiers died during this event and are buried in the cemetery in Old Washington.
