Playing for Clubs

Oleksandr Shovkovskyi was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. He started playing football at the Dynamo Kyiv academy when he was young. What's amazing is that he played for only one club, Dynamo Kyiv, his entire career! He has played more games for Dynamo than anyone else in the club's history.
He joined the main team in 1993. By the next year, he was already playing for the Ukrainian national team. For most of his career, he was the main goalkeeper for Dynamo. He was especially known for being great at saving penalty kicks. This made him very popular with fans and the media.
In 2011, Shovkovskyi played his 100th game in the UEFA Champions League, a very important European competition. He played a total of 121 matches in European cups. He stopped goals in 33 of those games, which is called keeping a "clean sheet."
Oleksandr Shovkovskyi announced he was retiring from playing football on December 13, 2016. He was 41 years old at the time.
Playing for Ukraine
Shovkovskyi was the main goalkeeper for Ukraine at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. This was a huge event for him and his country. In a match against Switzerland, the game went to a penalty shootout. Shovkovskyi saved two of Switzerland's penalty kicks! This helped Ukraine win and move on to the quarterfinals. He was the first goalkeeper in World Cup history to not let in any goals during a penalty shootout. He was even named "Man of the Match" for his amazing performance.
In September 2012, Shovkovskyi decided to retire from playing for the Ukraine national team. He had played 92 games for his country.
Years after he stopped playing, in 2020, Shovkovskyi was an assistant coach for the national team. When several goalkeepers got sick, he was listed as a backup goalkeeper for a friendly match against France. He was 45 years old then!
Political Life
Oleksandr Shovkovskyi also became involved in politics. He gained attention when he spoke about the Euromaidan events in Ukraine. He supported the movement and said he wanted Ukraine to follow "European values" instead of "Soviet values." He also asked UEFA, the European football organization, to have a moment of silence before Ukrainian club games, which they allowed.
In 2020, Shovkovskyi ran for a seat on the Kyiv City Council, which is like the local government for the city of Kyiv. He was part of the UDAR party, led by the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitaliy Klychko. Shovkovskyi was elected to the council, along with 29 other people from his party.
In January 2023, he left his job as an assistant coach for the Ukraine national team. He had been in that role since 2018.
