Oleksandr Shovkovskyi was born in Kyiv, Ukraine. He started his football journey at the Dynamo Kyiv football academy. He is very special because he played for only one club his entire career. He has played more games for Dynamo Kyiv than any other player in the club's history.

He moved up through different youth teams. In 1993, he made his first appearance for the main Dynamo Kyiv team. By the next year, he was already playing for the Ukraine national football team. For most of his career, he was the main goalkeeper for Dynamo. Sometimes, injuries kept him from playing.

Shovkovskyi became very famous for being great at saving penalty kicks. This made him popular with fans and in the news. By the end of 2009, he let in very few goals per game. He played over 300 games for his club.

In 2011, Shovkovskyi played his 100th game in the Champions League. This is a huge European club competition. He played 121 matches in European cups in total. He managed to keep the opposing team from scoring in 33 of those games.

On December 13, 2016, Shovkovskyi announced he was retiring from playing football. He was 41 years old.

Playing for Ukraine

Shovkovskyi played for the Ukraine national football team. He was the main goalkeeper for Ukraine at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. This was a very important tournament.

In a match against Switzerland, the game went to a penalty shootout. Shovkovskyi saved two penalty kicks! This helped Ukraine win and move on to the quarterfinals. He was the first goalkeeper in FIFA World Cup history to not let in any goals during a penalty shootout. He was named the "Man of the Match" for his amazing performance.

In 2008, he was voted the best player in a tournament in Israel. Dynamo Kyiv won this tournament against their rival team, Shakhtar Donetsk. In that game, Shovkovskyi saved three penalty kicks. He almost won the match by himself!

In September 2012, Shovkovskyi decided to stop playing for the Ukraine national team. He had played 92 games for his country.

Years after he retired, in October 2020, Shovkovskyi was listed as a backup goalkeeper for Ukraine. This happened for a friendly match against France. Three of the team's main goalkeepers had tested positive for COVID-19. Shovkovskyi, who was 45 at the time, stepped up to help his country.

His Work in Politics

Oleksandr Shovkovskyi also became involved in politics. He gained attention for speaking about the Euromaidan events. These were protests in Ukraine where people wanted their country to be closer to Europe.

He talked about how his grandfather always wished for no wars. Shovkovskyi became emotional when discussing the people who were hurt during the protests. He even asked UEFA, the European football organization, to have a moment of silence before Ukrainian club games. This request was approved.

Shovkovskyi supported the Euromaidan movement. He said he wanted to live by "European values." He also criticized the government at the time for using violence against protesters.

In October 2020, Shovkovskyi ran for a position in the Kyiv City Council. He was a candidate for the UDAR party. He was elected, along with 29 other people from his party.

In January 2023, he left his job as an assistant coach for the Ukraine national team. He had been in that role since 2018.
