Olga Teresa Tañón Ortiz (born April 13, 1967) is a famous singer from Puerto Rico. She is known for her energetic performances and powerful voice. Olga has won many important music awards, including two Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards. She also holds the record for the most Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, with 29! Her fans often call her the "Woman of Fire" because of her passion.

Early Life and Music Start

Olga Tañón was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. She was the youngest of four children. She grew up in Levittown, where she went to school.

Olga started singing very young. At 16, she was on a TV talent show called "Buscando Estrellas." She sang one of her own songs! Her professional singing career began in the 1980s. She first joined a group called "Las Nenas de Ringo y Jossie." Later, she became part of the merengue group Chantelle. With Chantelle, she had a big hit song called "Queriendo y No."

Solo Career and Success

Starting Solo in the 1990s

In 1992, Olga Tañón signed a contract to record music as a solo artist. Her first album was called Sola (Alone). It included popular songs like "Me cambio por ella" and "Quiero estar contigo." In 1993, she released her second album, Mujer de Fuego (Woman of Fire). This album had a song she wrote herself, "Presencié tu Amor." That year, she was nominated for three Lo Nuestro Awards.

Olga's music became very popular. In 1994, she earned her first double platinum record. This means her album sold a huge number of copies. In 1995, she earned three more platinum records with her album Siente el Amor (Feel the Love). This album featured her song "Unicornio" and the hit "Es Mentiroso."

Reaching New Audiences

Olga then recorded a Tex-Mex style CD called Nuevos Senderos with Mexican singer Marco Antonio Solís. This album helped her reach new fans around the world. With this recording, she became the first Puerto Rican musician to sell over half a million records in the U.S. The main song, "Basta Ya!", was number one on the U.S. Billboard Top Latin Tracks for many weeks. For this album, she was nominated for three Lo Nuestro Awards.

In 1997, Olga tried acting! She played Mary Magdalene in a Puerto Rican version of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. This show had a tropical feel and included some of Olga's songs. In 1998, Olga married baseball star Juan González. They had a daughter named Gabriella Marie. They later divorced in 1999.

The 2000s: Awards and Tours

By 2000, Olga was known as the "Woman of Fire." She recorded her first live concert album, "Olga Viva...Viva Olga." This album became platinum and earned her first Grammy Award. Olga performed many sold-out shows, including 12 shows in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She also toured the United States with Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández.

In 2001, Olga released the CD "Yo por Ti" (Me for You). This album won both American and Latin Grammys. Its first song, Como Olvidar, was a number one hit. The CD sold very well in Puerto Rico, Latin America, and among Hispanic people in the United States.

Olga toured many countries in 2002, like Venezuela, Panama, and the United States. She even became the first merengue artist to have a number one hit in the Middle East! This happened with her song Ah Ya Albi, which she sang with Egyptian singer Hakim. In 2003, Olga toured Europe. She released her album Sobrevivir and won her fourth Grammy. She also married Billy Denizard. They have two sons, Indiana Noa and Ian Nahir.

In 2005, Olga released her album "Una Nueva Mujer." It won "Best Contemporary Tropical Album" at the 2006 Latin Grammys. In 2006, she recorded "Nuestro Himno" to support Latin American immigrants in the U.S. She sang it with Pitbull, Carlos Ponce, and Wyclef Jean.

Olga continued to win many awards. On February 22, 2007, she won three awards at the 19th Premio Lo Nuestro show. She holds the record for winning the most Premio Lo Nuestro Awards, with 29 in total!

In June 2009, Olga released a new hit song called "Amor Entre Tres." It was the theme song for a soap opera in Venezuela. That same month, two "greatest hits" CDs were released, featuring her merengue and Latin pop songs. In September 2009, she performed at the "Concierto por la Paz" (Concert for Peace) in Havana, Cuba, alongside other artists like Juanes.

More recently, Olga has released several albums. These include "Ni Una Lagrima más" (2011), "Una Mujer" (2013), and "Olga Tañon y Punto" (2017).

Social Activism

After performing at the Concert for Peace in Cuba, Olga Tañón became more involved in social causes. In 2013, she announced her support for immigration reform in the United States. This reform would help immigrants gain citizenship and the right to vote. She also supports her home, Puerto Rico, becoming the 51st state of the U.S.
