Early Life and Music Beginnings
Olga Tañón grew up in Levittown, a town in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. She was the youngest of four children. Even when she was young, Olga loved to sing.
Starting Her Singing Journey
When Olga was just 16, she appeared on a TV talent show called "Buscando Estrellas." She sang a song she wrote herself. Her professional singing career began in the 1980s. She first joined a group called "Las Nenas de Ringo y Jossie." Later, she became part of the merengue group Chantelle. With Chantelle, she had a big hit song called "Queriendo y No."
Olga's Solo Career Takes Off
In 1992, Olga Tañón signed a contract with WEA Latina to record her own music. This was a big step for her solo career.
First Albums and Big Hits
Her first solo album was called Sola, which means "Alone." It included popular songs like "Me cambio por ella" and "Quiero estar contigo." In 1993, she released her second album, Mujer de Fuego (Woman of Fire). This album featured her own song, "Presencié tu Amor." That year, Olga was nominated for three Lo Nuestro Awards.
In 1994, Olga's music started selling even more. She earned her first double platinum record. This means her album sold over two million copies! In 1995, her album Siente el Amor (Feel the Love) earned three more platinum records. This album had her song "Unicornio," which was a salsa hit. It also included the popular song "Es Mentiroso."
Reaching New Audiences
Olga recorded a special album called Nuevos Senderos with Mexican singer Marco Antonio Solís. This album mixed merengue with Tex-Mex sounds. It helped her become popular in new countries. With this album, she was the first Puerto Rican musician to sell over half a million records in the U.S. The song "Basta Ya!" from this album became her first number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Top Latin Tracks chart.
In 1997, Olga tried acting! She played Mary Magdalene in a Puerto Rican version of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar. This show had a tropical style and included some of Olga's songs.
The "Woman of Fire" in the 2000s
By 2000, fans knew Olga Tañón as the "Woman of Fire" or "Mujer de Fuego." She recorded her first live concert album, "Olga Viva...Viva Olga." This album won her first Grammy Award.
More Success and Awards
In 2001, Olga released the CD "Yo por Ti" (Me for You). This album won both American and Latin Grammys. The first song, Como Olvidar, was a top hit on the U.S. Billboard Top Latin Tracks. This CD sold very well in Puerto Rico, Latin America, and among Hispanic people in the United States.
In 2002, Olga toured many countries, including Venezuela, Panama, and the United States. She even had a hit song in the Middle East! She worked with Egyptian singer Hakim on the song Ah Ya Albi. In 2003, Olga toured Europe. She released her album Sobrevivir and won her fourth Grammy.
In 2005, Olga released her album "Una Nueva Mujer." This album won "Best Contemporary Tropical Album" at the 2006 Latin Grammys.
Record-Breaking Awards
On February 22, 2007, Olga won three awards at the 19th Premio Lo Nuestro show. She won "Album of the Year," "Female Artist," and "Song of the Year." Olga Tañón holds the record for winning the most "Premio Lo Nuestro Awards," with a total of 29!
In June 2009, Olga released a new song called "Amor Entre Tres." This song was used as the theme for a TV show in Venezuela. Later that year, she joined other artists like Juanes in the "Concierto por la Paz" (Concert for Peace) in Havana, Cuba.
Olga's Recent Music
Olga Tañón has continued to release new music. In 2011, she released "Ni Una Lagrima más." In 2013, "Una Mujer" came out. Her album "Olga Tañon y Punto" was released in 2017. More recently, she released "Senderos de Amor" in 2021, "Tañón Pal' Combo es lo que hay" in 2022, and "Así Yo Soy" in 2024.
Helping Others
Olga Tañón is also involved in helping her community. After performing at the Concert for Peace in Cuba, she became more active in social causes. In 2013, she announced her support for immigration reform. She also supports the idea of Puerto Rico becoming the 51st state of the United States.
