Because of its historical importance, it was officially recognized as a Historic Scotland Category B listed monument on October 18, 1977.

Schools and Learning

After a new law was passed in 1872, a school board was set up in the Shetland Islands in 1873. This board helped create schools in several places, including Ollaberry. Ollaberry Primary School was one of these new schools. All of these schools were finished by 1880.

Later, in 1919, the Education Authority of Shetland took over the management of these schools. In 2014, there was a plan to close two other schools, North Roe and Urafirth. The idea was to combine them with Ollaberry Primary School. This merger was proposed to save about £156,000 each year in costs.
