Past Schools in Olyphant

When coal mining was a big industry, Olyphant had many small neighborhood schools. These included the Columbus School, Washington School, Roosevelt School, and Lincoln School. There were also smaller schools in Underwood Village and Marshwood.

The Central School served elementary students downtown. The Olyphant Senior High School was in an annex of the Central School. There was also a separate Olyphant Junior High School building.

Changes in the School System

As the town's population got smaller, many of these neighborhood schools closed down. In 1969, the school districts of Olyphant, Dickson City, and Throop joined together to form the Mid Valley School District.

The old Olyphant Junior High School became the Mid-Valley Senior High School. Later, the Olyphant Elementary School building was closed because it was unsafe. Students had to move to other schools. Eventually, new schools were built.

Today, the Mid-Valley School District has one elementary school and one secondary school. Both are located on Underwood Road in Throop.

Catholic Schools

Until the mid-1970s, many Catholic churches in Olyphant had their own schools, like St. Patrick's, St. Michael's, and Holy Ghost. The Saints Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic School stayed open longer but eventually closed too.

Now, students who want to attend private Catholic schools can go to nearby towns. These include La Salle Academy in Dickson City and Jessup for younger students. High school students can attend Bishop O'Hara High School in Dunmore or Scranton Preparatory School in Scranton.
