Early Life and Education
Omar Fateh was born in Washington, D.C. His parents came to the United States from Somalia.
He went to Falls Church High School. Later, he earned both his first degree and a master's degree from George Mason University.
After college, Fateh worked in different government jobs in Minneapolis. One of these jobs was helping people learn about voting.
Serving in the Minnesota Senate
In 2020, Omar Fateh decided to run for the Minnesota Senate. He challenged the person who was already in office, Senator Jeff Hayden. Fateh received support from groups like the Democratic Socialists of America. He also got the official support from the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Fateh won the primary election against Hayden. He then won the general election with a large number of votes.
Fateh officially started his work in the Minnesota legislature on January 5, 2021. During his first term, the Senate was controlled by the Republican Party. However, the DFL controlled the House and the governor's office. Fateh worked on many bills during his first two years. One important bill he wrote became law. ..... This law was passed even though the government was divided. Reports showed that these strips helped many people.
In 2022, Fateh won his primary election again. He won every voting area. He then won the general election against his Republican opponent. In 2022, Democrats gained control of the Senate, House, and governor's office. This is called a "trifecta." Fateh was chosen to lead the Senate Higher Education committee. He also became the vice chair of the Senate Human Services Committee.
Helping Students and Workers
Fateh worked on a bill to make public colleges and universities free for some students. This included tribal colleges. It was for students from families earning less than $80,000 a year. His bill also increased money for programs that help students with food and emergencies.
Fateh was a main supporter of a bill to help drivers for companies like Uber and Lyft. This bill aimed to give them minimum wages and better protections. Groups representing these drivers supported the bill. It passed both the House and Senate. However, Governor Tim Walz did not sign it into law at first. Fateh worked on a new version of the bill for 2024. This time, it passed with the governor's support. The new minimum wage for drivers started in late 2024.
Campaign Funding and Ethics
In 2022, Fateh returned money he received for his campaign. This money was connected to a nonprofit organization called Feeding Our Future. This organization was being investigated for problems with money. Fateh had first defended the group. But he changed his mind after federal investigations began. He later said he was upset that some people were not honest with him.
Also in 2022, Fateh faced an investigation about his campaign. It was about not reporting some money his campaign paid for ads. Another complaint was about his brother-in-law. His brother-in-law was found guilty of not telling the truth about handling some ballots for Fateh's campaign. The ethics committee looked into these complaints. They decided that the unreported ad expense was not their responsibility. They sent it to another board to handle. Fateh was also asked to take training on campaign finance rules.
Running for Mayor of Minneapolis
On November 20, 2024, Omar Fateh announced he was running for mayor of Minneapolis. On July 19, 2025, the Minneapolis DFL group officially supported Fateh for mayor. This was over the current mayor, Jacob Frey.
During his campaign, Fateh faced some unfair treatment. This started with comments from a right-wing commentator. Other local politicians, including those running against him, spoke out to support Fateh.
Political Ideas
Housing and Homelessness
Fateh believes in making housing more affordable. He supports rent stabilization, which means limiting how much landlords can raise rent. He also wants more housing to be built.
On the topic of homelessness, Fateh supports a "just cause" eviction policy. This means landlords would need a good reason to evict someone. He believes that evictions are a big reason why people become homeless. He also supports having clean places for people at homeless camps. He does not support clearing out homeless camps.
Personal Life
Omar Fateh lives in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis. His sister-in-law, Zaynab Mohamed, is also a Minnesota State Senator. He is expecting his first child in 2025.
