How Phillips Got Its Name
The Phillips community was named after Wendell Phillips. He was an important person in the 1800s who worked to end slavery. He was known as an "abolitionist."
Neighborhoods Inside Phillips
On May 9, 2002, the Phillips area was divided into four smaller, official neighborhoods. These are:
Phillips also includes the Little Earth residential area. Even though it's not an official neighborhood, it's an important part of the community.
Phillips Boundaries
The Phillips community has clear borders.
- To the north, it's bordered by Interstate 94.
- To the east, you'll find Hiawatha Avenue.
- To the south, it reaches Lake Street.
- To the west, its border is Interstate 35W.
Important Projects and Trails
One of the biggest projects in the city recently was the makeover of the old Sears building. This building, located in Midtown Phillips, was turned into a mix of offices, a hotel, shops, and homes. It cost $189 million!
On the east side of Phillips, along Hiawatha Avenue, there's the Little Earth Trail. This trail connects many smaller neighborhoods, parks, businesses, and other paths for walking and biking.
Local Government
Phillips is part of two different areas, or "wards," for the City Council. These are Ward 6 and Ward 9.
- Ward 6 is represented by Council Member Jamal Osman.
- Ward 9 is represented by Council Member Jason Chavez.
These council members help make decisions for the city and their wards.
