The One America Appeal was a special group created to help people after big storms. It was started on September 7, 2017. All five former U.S. Presidents who were alive at the time worked together to create it. These presidents were Jimmy Carter, George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama.
This group first aimed to help people affected by Hurricane Harvey. Later, they also helped areas hit by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The presidents announced this effort with a special TV message. It was shown during a NFL game at the start of their season.
All the money collected went into a special account. This account was set up through the George H. W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation. The money was then given out to help people affected by the hurricanes. By December 31, 2017, the appeal had raised over $41 million. About 110,500 people donated to this important cause.
Helping Through Music
A special concert was held to raise money for the appeal. It was called "Deep from the Heart: The One America Appeal." The concert took place on October 21, 2017. It was held at Reed Arena at Texas A&M University in College Station.
All five former U.S. Presidents attended the concert. Money from ticket sales and other activities went to help hurricane recovery. The concert was hosted by Lee Greenwood. Many famous musicians performed, including the country band Alabama, Sam Moore, Yolanda Adams, Lyle Lovett, and Robert Earl Keen.
Lady Gaga made a surprise appearance at the concert. She sang some of her popular songs. The Texas A&M University Singing Cadets also performed. They sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" and other patriotic songs. A video message from the sitting US President, Donald Trump, was shown. He praised the effort as "tremendous."
