One Atlantic Center, also known as IBM Tower, is a very tall building called a skyscraper. It is located in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia. This impressive building was once the tallest in Atlanta and helped create a new business area in the city.

Building History

One Atlantic Center is the third-tallest building in Atlanta. It stands about 820 feet (250 m) high. The building has 50 floors, all used for office space. It was finished in 1987. For five years, it was the tallest building in Atlanta. Then, in 1992, the Bank of America Plaza became taller. When it was built, One Atlantic Center was also the tallest building in the southeastern United States. It was even taller than the Southeast Financial Center in Miami.

Cool Design Features

The building was designed by Johnson/Burgee Architects. It was built for IBM, a famous technology company. This tower brought a new style of architecture to Atlanta. It also helped create the Midtown business district. Even though it was built far from Downtown at first, many offices quickly moved in. This made other builders want to build in Midtown too.

Outside Look

The outside of the building is covered in pink Spanish granite. The very top of the building is a copper pyramid with a gold tip. The design also has some Gothic-style details. You can see these details just below the copper top. At night, the top and its edges light up brightly. This makes the building glow against the night sky.

Nearby Buildings

In 2001, a shorter building called Regions Plaza was built nearby. It has a similar design to One Atlantic Center. This new building was the second part of the Atlantic Center project. Because it looks so much like One Atlantic Center, people in Atlanta sometimes call it the "Mini Me" building. This is a funny nickname from the Austin Powers movies.

Who Designed and Built It?

One Atlantic Center was designed by Johnson/Burgee Architects. Another company, Heery International, Inc., helped create the building plans. Both One Atlantic Center and Regions Plaza were built by HCBeck. This company is now known as The Beck Group.
